PXfile is a program package the purpose of which is to create, initialise and work with file systems compatible to DOS or UNIX in connection with PXROS. PXfile can be used for imitating other file systems; it also permits the user to access different memory media. PXfile is part of the Basic Communication Package.
A file system generated with PXfile shows a hierarchical structure similar to the UNIX file system. This means it starts with a "root", a directory which is generated during initialisation of the file system. In this directory, files and subdirectories structured in the same way can be created. PXfile offers the possibility to set user numbers and group numbers for tasks in a way as with UNIX where there are user numbers and group numbers for processes. These numbers allow easy setting of explicit access permissions during the creation of files and directories. Certain functions are only allowed to be run by the task marked as super user. In this mode it is allowed to read and write all files and directories, irrespective of his access rights. Additional security within the file system is assured by the built-in file system check by which inconsistencies are reported and removed on request. Power failure handling ensures a restart even from unbuffered RAM. In combination with PXtcp and PXnfs, access to remote file systems is possible via TCP/IP. Supported MediaPXfile is capable of accessing file systems on the following media:
